Peugeot has made its first attack on the SUV market with the launch of the new 4007 model. Prices start from ?40,200 before delivery charges.

Peugeot has launched its first SUV in Ireland with the arrival of the new Peugeot 4007. The 4007 extends the brand virtues of style, dynamism, innovation and quality and has been designed to attract new customers who are looking for something distinctive. The new 4007 shares a lot of its engineering technology with the Mitsubishi Outlander and the Citroen C-Crosser. Peugeot expects to sell 200 of the 4007 model in Ireland in 2008.

Positioned in the heart of the SUV market, the Peugeot 4007 SR 2.2 HDi 156bhp with particle filter will retail from €40,200 plus dealer delivery related charges. A special ST 2.2 HDi launch model will be available in Ireland, equipped with 18" alloy wheels and seven seats, which will retail at €43,195 plus dealer delivery related charges.

The 4007 extends the Peugeot product portfolio and features an innovative electronically controlled four-wheel drive system, latest generation HDi engine technology and a versatile, dynamic and flexible interior which can transport up to seven in style and comfort.

One of the most important engineering credentials of the 4007 is its electronic on-demand 4WD system. Unlike many other systems, the 4007 enables the driver to select three modes of drive, while on the move.

Drivers have the choice of a permanent 2WD, great for the majority of times when travelling around town or on a motorway, with all power directed to the front wheels. When the automatic 4WD is selected, engine torque is delivered automatically to wheels that require the most traction at any time.

With permanent 4WD, torque is split 50:50 between front and rear wheels making it perfect for when the going gets tough. Peugeot claim that this technology gives 4007 the 'best of both worlds', for it can tackle some of the roughest terrain, yet still provides excellent on-road dynamic behaviour and excellent fuel economy.

Powering 4007 is a variation of the 2.2-litre HDi engine first seen in the 407 HDi 170bhp. In this application, it produces 156bhp at 4000 rpm, but its torque increases to an exceptionally strong 380 Nm at just 2,000 revs. The flexibility of this engine makes it very tractable when performing off-road and gives fantastic performance on road too. The 2.2-litre HDi 156 engine with six-speed manual transmission emits just 191 g/km CO2 and is fitted as standard with a diesel particulate filter system (FAP), technology pioneered by Peugeot back in 2000.

The new 4007 is launched with three trim levels: SR, ST and SV. Standard equipment includes ESP, ABS and EBFD, an electronic 'on-demand' four-wheel drive system, automatic air conditioning with climate control, pollen and dust filters, six airbags (front, side, and curtain), electric and heated door mirrors, radio / CD MP3 reader with steering wheel audio controls, automatic headlights, cruise control and electric front and rear windows. The SR model comes with five seats as standard.

The ST model has a choice of five or seven seats, and gains 16" alloy wheels, roof rails, leather trimmed steering wheel and gearknob and one lockable and one refrigerated glove box. The top-of-the-range SV model has a choice of five or six seats and benefits from 18" alloy wheels, Xenon headlamps and washers, rear parking aid, heated driver and passenger seats, leather upholstery, driver electric adjustable seat, chrome window mouldings and kick plates, CD changer and tinted windows on row two and three.
