The Peugeot 308 has been awarded the 2007 Goldene Lenkrad (Golden Steering Wheel) for Best Family Car in Germany. This award is presented annually by Germany's national weekly newspaper Bild am Sonntag following in-depth trials and tests where the selection criteria included style, design, comfort, road holding, safety, environmental friendliness and quality.
All new models launched on the German market over the past 12 months, were divided into four main categories; small cars, compact, medium/executive and SUVs. Bild am Sonntag readers short listed five finalists per category. A 23-strong jury of racing drivers, automotive professionals and media personalities then assessed each of the five finalist vehicles.
The Peugeot 308 hatchback was chosen as the best compact family car ahead of its four short-listed competitors. It also came first in nine of the 15 judgment criteria and outperformed both the Toyota Auris and the Hyundai i30.
The first Peugeot of the "8" generation, the 308 has five major strengths to help it make its mark in the highly competitive European M1 segment: a distinctive style, a semi-tall architecture ensuring greater interior brightness, space and comfort, benchmark road holding and active safety.
The 308 also proclaims its environmental friendliness through the adoption of innovative technical solutions in terms of aerodynamics, energy saving tyres and class leading engines, designed to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Having only been on sale for six weeks, the new 308 hatchback, is currently being sold at an average rate of 1,200 orders in Europe everyday. Whilst only currently available in hatchback guise, there will be numerous other developments in terms of body shapes and engines.
With this new title, Automobiles Peugeot wins the Golden Steering Wheel for the sixth time: the Peugeot 505 was the forerunner in 1979, followed by the 205 in 1983, the 405 in 1987, the 306 in 1993 and the 206 in 1998.
