All Dodge Nitro models come with passive safety systems which include advanced multi-stage front air bags, full-length side curtain air bags, Sentry Key engine immobiliser and a tyre pressure monitoring system that alerts occupants when pressure in any individual tyre is too low. The standard feature package is impressive. All models come with cruise control, air conditioning, 17" alloys, electric 6 way driver's seat, front fog lamps, remote keyless entry, chrome grille, floor mats and leather steering wheel. The Nitro is fitted with what Dodge call the YES Essentials seat fabric, made from an easy-care, soil-repellent and anti-microbial textile and its designed to protect seats from stains, odours and discolouration. And there's a big feeling to the Nitro so there are plenty of storage spots. The centre console has room for hand-held electronic organisers, mobile phones or coins. The top panel in this section seems a little frail and rather than tilt it must be removed, not that impressive in a design sense. The Dodge Load 'N Go floor is something special for the Dodge Nitro. This is a panel that slides 457mm (18 in.) rearward for easy, convenient loading and unloading of packages. It can take a load up to 181kg (400 lb.). There are some useful storage boxes underneath. And the sound system includes an auxiliary audio input jack for MP3 connectivity and play capability. The overall kerb weight of the Nitro is over 2 tonnes, which makes it amongst the heaviest of the mid-range SUV's on the market. That has some impact on its fuel economy and CO2 rating, while having a positive impact on the towing rating. The towing rating for a braked trailer is 2.5 tonnes, which is well ahead of the competition. Dodge has kept the Nitro pricing somewhat competitive, especially given the size of the engine under the bonnet. VRT changes from July will impact on the current pricing. The entry price is €42,495 for the six speed manual gearbox version, which is better priced than the Honda CR-V or new Nissan X-Trail. You can take €10,000 from that price if you opt for the commercial version of the Nitro, which still has the distinctive looks without rear seats, and that's reasonable value. But if you want to preserve the value and minimise your road tax rates do the deal before July 1, 2008 and save yourself some money. |
