The numbers of new cars registered in Ireland in 2006 rose by 4.1 per cent over the 2005 market, according to the latest statistics from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).

The SIMI figures show that 178,826 new cars were registered during 2006 compared with 171,732 in 2005.

This is a lower level of sales than was anticipated by some leading figures in the motor industry. The rush of sales following the release of SSAI funds did not convert to as many new cars as was expected. There is a higher level of expectation for SSIA funded new car sales in 2007.

Toyota topped the new car market with a 14.2 per cent share, followed by Ford at 11.3 per cent and close behind was Volkswagen at 11.2 per cent. Nissan was in fourth position, followed by Opel in fifth.

In the light van sector the number of new vans registered rose by 10.1 per cent to give a final tally of 40,591 new vans for the 2006. Ford led the light van market, followed by Volkswagen with Toyota in third place.

Heavy truck registrations also rose last year up by 20 per cent to give a final figure of 5,859 new trucks registered. The market leader was the DAF range, followed by Scania and Volvo in third place.
