If you are waiting for notice of an NCT Car Test you may be left waiting. The NCTS will not guarantee to call every car owner due for a test, according to a recent report, meaning that you as the car owner are responsible for making the contact with NCTS. And the risk of being fined up to €1,500 looms over your head if you don't and you're stopped by a Garda. While the NCTS website gives assurances that the organisation will 'contact owners of eligible motor vehicles (based on official vehicle registration records) in advance of the anniversary date of first registration of your car', it has been confirmed that this may not actually the case. The onus is on the car owner to be aware of when the car test is due and to have their car tested. Garda checkpoints usually check for valid NCT certificates along with insurance and tax. They will issue summonses if you have no reasonable excuse for not displaying a valid NCT disc when it is required. There is normally a delay of a few weeks between the change of ownership forms being processed by the Department of the Environment and the transfer of information to the NCTS. But be aware that in the process, the NCTS may not issue a testing notice and you could be breaking the car if you are driving an untested car. |
