Mitsubishi aims to launch the i-MiEV electric car in 2009 with limited numbers planned for the Irish and UK markets.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has reported that its brand new factory is scheduled to be ready for next April's start of production of the new i-MiEV all-electric 5-door city car. The factory will initially produce 1 million palm-size lithium-ion cells a year, which is enough to power 10,000 vehicles.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has prioritized the development of the i-MiEV for introduction to the Japanese domestic market in 2009 and has confirmed its plans for introduction to Europe in 2010. MMC's electric vehicle strategy is to become one of the leading car manufacturers of electric vehicles in the world.

As this car will be built in right hand drive form for the Japanese market you can expect to see a small number of these cars available on the Irish market from 2009. There is no indication of what the price will be but Mitsubishi aim to ensure that the electric powered i-MiEV is competitive.
