The engine is started on the now fashionable push button system. The doors open on approach based on the key fob and, once inside, you can start up by just pushing the button on the dash. There is a three-memory button system for the electric seating and steering wheel adjustment positions, to allow for personalisation.

The rear boot section splits in two for opening, giving a drop down section that is claimed to be lighter to use. The third row of seats in the boot section folds hydraulically with zero effort. It's just a pity Toyota could not stretch its inventiveness to hiding them totally and maximizing this load space.

The new V8 comes with a clear and easy to use satellite navigation system. The screen is large and easy to read. The screen also provides control for the radio and heating settings, which are easy to set.

The Land Cruiser V8 safety package is also impressive. There are 14 airbags on board, including side airbags for the rear occupants. The other safety features include the usual ABS systems ESP, while Toyota also fits what is called a Multi-terrain ABS system to optimise braking control in difficult driving conditions.

The Land Cruiser is a big, practical but expensive vehicle if you have the right application. It's the kind of vehicle that you could go to war with - just look at any war back spot in the world and you'll find big Land Cruisers in the front line. Irish list prices start at €126,440 which is a big chunk of anybody's money. In price terms this is Range Rover territory but with more power, improved comfort and a huge reliability record.
