The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has released figures for new car sales for July. New cars sold in July 2007 (13,150) was 8.4 per cent up on July 2006 (12,135), while sales for the first seven months of the year (166,322) were 5.96 per cent up on the same period in 2006 (156,960).

Commenting on the figures, SIMI CEO, Cyril McHugh said, “Despite some commentators talking down the economy, it is clear from car sales that consumer confidence continues to be very strong.”

Light and heavy commercial vehicles sales are an indication of commercial activity and both of these markets are particularly buoyant, although sales of heavy commercial vehicles are continuing to readjust from the introduction to the tachograph in May 2006."

Light commercial vehicle sales for the first seven months of 2007 (35,851) are up 13 per cent on the same period last year (31,719) while heavy vehicle sales are down 7.74 per cent (4,135) up to end of July 2007 compared to the same period in 2006 (4,482).
