Page 2 of 2 With petrol prices staying firmly ahead of diesel at the pumps, you have to give the option of the entry diesel Mondeo with a 1.8 litre TDi engine more serious thought. There is a 25% fuel economy advantage in taking the diesel route with its six-speed gearbox, and this car has better acceleration to boot. The price difference of over ?3,000 makes this choice more for higher mileage drivers. Ford has pushed the safety competition with seven airbags as standard, including a new knee airbag for all Mondeo models. Ford has also set a lead in offering all models with Electronic Stability Programme (ESP). This feature has been proven to save lives and I still believe that Ford deserves full credit for fitting it to the Mondeo models as standard well ahead of the proposed EU requirement date of 2012. The entry price of €24,995 gives the Mondeo as a real value for money option in what is called the D segment of the market. That's only marginally dearer that the outgoing 1.8 litre model, which offers less in terms of economy and features. If you're considering a Mondeo you just have to look at the entry diesel powered option. This is a great car to drive with an entry price of €27,995, has similar performance to the 1.6 litre petrol model and comes with 25% better fuel economy, at a time when diesel prices are often 10 cent/litre lower than petrol. That car is worth a test drive to you're your own comparison. The new Ford Mondeo has a lot to offer, style, great interior space, impressive safety features and competitive pricing. Can the prices hold? If you are considering a Mondeo look at it now, Ford dealer will be keen to quote, even if I hear rumours of long delivery times. Mondeo has made the change for Ford.
