Car sales across Europe fell to their lowest level in 20 years last month, with a drop of 27 per cent.
All countries suffered substantial losses, although there were stark differences between them.
France proved the most resilient in terms of the drop in its market, with a fall of 7.9 per cent, while in Iceland sales crashed by 88 per cent. The total European January market was 958,500 cars, the lowest level in two decades.
