The EU Commission wants to see the Irish Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) system scrapped. The Commission has presented proposals for a directive which if passed would force the Irish government to change the current VRT system.

The commission wants to remove the current national taxes, which make it difficult to transfer cars from one member country to another. It proposes the removal of car registration taxes over a period of five to ten years.
