EU agreement on the retrofitting of truck mirrors

The EU Transport Council reached an agreement on a Directive providing for retrofitting of mirrors on the passenger side of HGVs (Heavy Goods Vehicles). Retrofitting will have to be carried out by 2010.

The agreement reached complements a Directive adopted in 2003 which provides that all new HGVs entering into service from 26 January 2007, must be equipped with a set of enhanced mirrors and other systems to improve the lateral field of indirect vision, which can reduce significantly a driver's blind spot.
