Electric vehicles make slow inroads E-mail

Demand for electric vehicles is claimed to be increasing across Europe as motorists feel the pressure of rising fuel prices, congestion charges and increasing road tax.

However, a widespread change to electric power is being stalled by two currently insurmountable obstacles, vehicle range which is limited to around 80km (50 miles) on a single charge and topping up the batteries means a vehicle being plugged in for several hours with public recharging points scarce.

And, for 'green' purists, such vehicles are far from carbon neutral since the electricity to power them has come from somewhere.
