Many Irish business and holiday drivers have been fined for motoring offences abroad, many of which they did not even realise were against the law. Irish drivers are likely to fall victim to the minefield of differing rules across countries.
The offences include:
- Using cruise control when driving in heavy traffic in Belgium
- Having a speed camera detector in the car on French roads
- Allowing children under five to travel in the front seat in Cyprus
- Leaving a dog unattended in a parked car in Belgium
- Running out of petrol on the German autobahns
- Carrying a petrol can in the car when driving in Greece
- Most offences attract on-the-spot fines that can run to hundreds of euros.
