New recommendations for changes on used car traceability by a group set up within the Department of Transport will be welcomed by used car buyers. The recommendations will allow for the creation of a system whereby used car buyers may be able to know if vehicles have been written off in crashes and repaired.
At present car owners and insurance companies do not have to pass on details of car write-offs to the National Vehicle Driver File (NVDF). This situation has allowed some cars classed as "total write-offs" to be repaired without detection. These cars are considered dangerous because it is not known how they will react if involved in another crash. The group has recommended the introduction of an end of life certificate for written-off cars so that they cannot be repaired again.
