The Compass operates in front-wheel drive for 90 per cent of the time and automatically switches to 4x4 when more traction is needed. Freedom-Drive has a lockable centre coupling to give the driver the option to put Jeep Compass in four-wheel-drive Lock mode to handle deeper snow, sand and other low-traction surfaces. In Lock mode, up to 60 per cent of torque is sent to the rear axle. In a design and style sense, the new Jeep Compass features the Jeep brand's signature seven-slot grille, round headlamps and trapezoidal wheel arches. Other than the front end, the rest of the styling is very different from traditionally styled Jeep vehicles. The side profile is similar to many SUVs on the market today. The Jeep Compass is well equipped. The standard kit includes advanced multi-stage front air bags, supplemental side-curtain air bags, ABS with Brake Assist System, 18" alloy wheels, front fog lamps, electric folding mirrors, air conditioning, cruise control, electric front and rear windows, heated fronts seats, leather trimmed bucket seats, leather wrapped steering wheel, privacy glass in rear, interior cargo lamp with removable, rechargeable LED flashlight, reclining rear seats, fold-flat front passenger seat and a host of other features. On the safety front, I'm impressed that the Compass comes with Electronic Stability Programme (ESP). The other safety features include Brake Traction Control System, Brake Assist System, Electronic Roll Mitigation, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with rough-road detection and child seat anchor system (ISOFIX). It also offers a high level of security, including a Sentry Key® Engine Immobiliser and a security alarm. The Compass offering is completed in a competitive price package. The entry price is €33,995 before delivery charges, which is competitive relative to the likes of the RAV4 and Honda CR-V. It is even keener priced than the Suzuki Grand Vitara and offers more in terms of specification, performance and economy. If you're looking for a compact SUV, with some useful off-road heritage and good economy, then point yourself towards the Compass, the new option from Jeep. |
