Mercedes Benz has added more safety, fuel economy and enhanced looks to
the new C-Class, which I had on test in recent weeks. The car retains
its relatively compact shape and size and now offers equipment and
performance that is top of the sector along with that Mercedes Benz
luxury touch.
The new C-Class has a sportier look to it and this was further enhanced in the Avantgarde model, which I had. This model uses a three-louvre radiator grille design to give the car a bolder and sporty type look.
The more important ability of the car is based under the bonnet. The test car was the C200 CDi model, which came with a 2.2 litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine. The previous model was fitted with a similar engine, but Mercedes Benz engineers have released more power and torque from the new model.
Engine power takes a lift from 148bhp to 167bhp, a jump of 13 per cent, while the torque ability jumps by 18 per cent. The new engine gives better acceleration, is cleaner, with lower emissions and it’s more economical than the previous C-Class 220.
On the acceleration front, the 0 to 100km/hr rating has been shaved by one and a half seconds to 8.5 seconds. That puts the C-Class amongst the fastest car to accelerate within the 2.0 and 2.2 litre diesel engine segment. And all that has been achieved while cutting emission levels and retaining the fuel economy rating. This C-Class 220 CDi has retained its fuel economy ratings and in the combined driving mode can achieve about 6.2 litres/100km (45mpg). That’s impressive in its own right relative to the competition, even the new Ford Mondeo, against which the C-Class has more compact dimensions.
So, while Mercedes Benz has retained the luxury look, the C-Class scores in all of the right areas in a practical sense. This makes the investment in a C-Class more easily justifiable, even if you want to flaunt that extra sense of luxury. And that’s where the C-Class scores with many Irish buyers.
For this latest model Mercedes Benz has put greater emphasis on comfort. This new model comes with a host of comfort features new to the range and previously offered only in the bigger cars.
The most notable of these is the new suspension damper system. Mercedes Benz call it an Agility Control system and it’s designed to adjust the dampers on each wheel to a harder or a softer setting according to a given driving situation. You can adjust the damper setting based on your type of driving by pressing a button on the centre console.
