New car prices could increase under EU Commission plans to cut vehicle emission levels. The EU announced proposed emissions targets along with fines for vehicle manufacturers that fail to meet those targets in December last.
Manufacturers claim that they will have to pass on the costs of meeting the average 120g/km target by 2012 to car buyers. Motor industry experts say that the cost of developing new technology to meet the environmental standards could be as much as €3,000 per car.
Luxury car buyers are likely to face the steepest price increases. The EU says that the additional cost will be more than offset by fuel economy savings over the lifetime of the vehicle as a result of the technology developments.
But, environmental campaigners called the EU's proposals a 'hypocritical compromise', which contradicted claims made at the Bali climate change conference that Europe was leading the world on cleaning up the environment. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that the emission limits would burden the German car industry disproportionately.
