Bosch, the world’s largest car parts supplier, wants to lead a push to get carmakers to agree standard set-ups for certain components and systems to cut costs and complexity. The company says that rising research and development costs were making agreement on standardisation more pressing for carmakers. Bosch currently produces 40-50 versions of some components such as common rail injection valves for engines for a range of manufacturers.
The most likely areas for standardisation would be in engine and gear management parts and in software and safety systems.
