AA Ireland has deployed a new motorbike team to its Rescue Fleet to ensure faster responses in high traffic areas of Dublin and Cork.

These ultra-modern machines carry a full range of diagnostic and repair equipment, and the motorbike Patrols can carry out all sorts of repairs on the spot. The new motorbikes will go into service immediately.

"The bikes are perfect for use on the congested city streets, allowing us to beat the traffic and get to the member as quickly as possible," said Membership Director Dennis Fisk. "They are fully equipped and deployed from our state-of-the-art Rescue Centre, and can be used in busy areas more efficiently than a conventional Rescue van."

Members with long memories will recall that Motorbike patrols were a major part of the breakdown fleet in years gone by. Covering the country's roads and literally 'Patrolling' stretches of the early highways of Ireland, the AA motorbike with its uniformed rider became part of the landscape. The traditional AA salute dates from that time and is still remembered with fondness as an icon of yesteryear.

The 21st century descendents of those early machines are a modern reflection of that heritage. Specially adapted to carry AA equipment including handheld electronic diagnostics, battery boosters, general tools and 'effective entry' equipment for when keys are locked inside. All designed to get you going as fast as possible.

Car breakdowns have distinct patterns. The busiest days for the Rescue Service are Monday mornings, when the car that may have been sitting idle for the weekend suddenly lets you down just when you need it or croaks to a halt in the morning traffic jam. There is no shortage of wet weather in Ireland and a morning of lashing rain makes the traffic worse but also makes mechanical breakdown much more likely. The vast majority of these breakdowns can be fixed quickly and easily once the Patrol can get to the scene.

"Motorbikes cannot tow vehicles, but they are ideal for rapid response in traffic and can also access certain areas like underground car parks much more easily than larger vans. With the bikes, nine out of ten vehicles are diagnosed and repaired on the spot," says Fisk.
