A fleet of Shannon One Designs raced on the splendid waters of Lough Corrib over the Bank Holiday Weekend, enjoying a wide range of wind strengths and plenty of sunshine. ![]() On Saturday due to the strong winds experienced, four races were sailed in the sheltered waters off Ashford castle with challenging tight courses including two figure of eight courses. Two reefs were mandatory for the fleet and there was no gear failure or capsizes. Mark McCormick from Lough Ree Yacht Club won the Lisloughrey Trophy for days racing with Jonathan Craig and Tommy Day from the Royal St George Yacht Club in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. On Sunday the fleet raced from Lisloughrey Pier to Cornamona Jetties in the Gaeltacht with two reefs still bent on. This is the only time the Shannon One Designs enjoy the experience of sailing in the Gaeltacht and they were well looked after in O'Malley's Pub at the bridge in the village. The winds moderated and after lunch the reefs were shaken out and the fleet raced back to Lisloughrey on a broad reach in 46 minutes a distance of seven and a half miles. Jonathan Craig won the Inishamboe Plate for the days racing from Tommy Day, Reggie Goodbody and Mark McCormick close on his transom. Monday produced a lovely fresh breeze with a full sail and the fleet had two races between the Lisloughrey and Oughterard Shores. Mark McCormick won these races convincingly and so secured the overall Championship for the second year in a row. The Silver fleet was won by Eoin Carroll Lough Ree Yacht Club followed closely by William Leech Lough Derg Yacht Club and John Lefroy from Lough Derg Yacht Club. |
