As part of a funding round worth €20 million, NUIG marine researchers received €9.2 million from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, and the Department for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources in September. The NUIG money is divided into €2 million for the Centre for Rural Transformation and Sustainability, while the remaining €7.2 million was awarded to a consortium of research groups from UCC, NUIG and QUB. The funding was part of the Beaufort Awards, named after Irish hydrographer Francis Beaufort, and altogether it will fund 141 researchers and students working in 5 research consortia, across 5 institutions. In a statement, the Marine Institute welcomed the awards as a positive step towards "placing Ireland as a world-class player in marine science and as a pillar of the ongoing Sea Change national strategy for marine research, knowledge and innovation." |
