The NUIG Windsurfing team, captained by Gwilym Williams, took home three prizes at this year's Windsurfing Intervarsities at Coláiste UISCE, Belmullet. NUIG won best overall college after outstanding performances in the 'Expression Session' and Sunday's slalom competition. Nigel Plummer, a third year science student, won best overall male, while Clodagh Ní Bhric, NUIG Alumni, won best female sailor. This is the second time in three years that NUIG has taken home the perpetual trophy and the club is now considering hosting the intervarsities in 2010. Club members are hoping the win will increase the popularity of windsurfing in the university. "We are delighted with the wins," said Williams. "There were some excellent sailors on the water and the conditions were epic for the event." With winds gusting up to 52 knots and huge swell. Met Éireann issued weather warnings all weekend but this did not deter any of the competitors in getting wet and ripping it up for their college team. The competition was organised by Coláiste Dhúlaigh. Off the water there was plenty of entertainment. The Red Bull DJ kept competitors motivated with quality tunes in between heats and The Walls (formerly known as The Stunning) played a gig at the Broadhaven Bay Hotel on Saturday night, helping competitors to relax after a tough day on the water. GMIT won the Memorial Cup for the Silver Fleet and will be organising the event next year. |
