Galway RNLI Lifeboat went to the rescue of a group of people presumed stranded on Hare Island last Wednesday, 9 January. The group, five French nationals, had set up camp on the island for the night and said they did not wish to be rescued.

The group had parked their car at Ballyloughane Beach at around midday on Wednesday at low tide and were noticed by a number of local people who assumed they had walked out the causeway to the island. When their vehicle was still on the beach several hours later and the causeway flooded, the locals became worried and contacted the Garda?.

Galway Lifeboat was alerted to the situation by the Coastguard at approx 19.20 hrs and launched within ten minutes. When they reached the island, the group of five said they did not wish to be rescued. They had set up a tent and facilities and wished to camp on Hare Island overnight.

The Galway Lifeboat Crew involved in the launch were: Seamus Carter, Barry Heskin, John Byrne and Alan Sweeney.
