The latest water sports craze across the world has hit Galway. Stand-up paddle boarding is billed as "a cross between windsurfing, canoeing and surfing," and is now available to try out at Rusheen Bay.

Celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston are reportedly taking on the sport as the latest unusual workout, because it has many of the properties of wobble boards, known to be great for toning hard-to-reach muscle groups. The paddling action used tones abs, while the continually wobbling board tones the legs and thighs.

"Using a board like a wide surf board, you stand up and paddle with it with a specially adapted one-handed paddle," according to Cathal Kavanagh of Rusheen Bay.

Classes in stand-up paddle boarding began last Saturday, 12 April, costing €15 for 30 minutes. Classes are run every day, Monday to Friday, at 5pm and 6pm, while weekend classes take place every Saturday and Sunday at 2pm and 3pm.
