Galway-based Irish Water Safety has stressed the importance of vigilance and caution to avoid drowning tragedies during the current heat wave. The organisation says it is fearful of further drowning tragedies with people swimming to cool down in water which is still in single figures in most bathing places. According to John Leech, the organisation's CEO, "cold water, currents and other conditions on the open water require more energy than does swimming in a pool, many people are not water fit at present so they should exercise great care when swimming." He also warned responsible adults to keep a vigilant eye on children. "No matter what the aquatic sport or aquatic activity you're involved in, wear your lifejacket or buoyancy aid when on or near the water," added MR Leech, saying that lifejackets should always be fitted correctly with a crotch strap. In sympathising with families who have suffered the loss of a loved one this summer, the CEO is pleading with people to remember the steps to safe swimming: Don't swim alone; Don't swim just after eating; Don't swim when you're hot or tired; Don't swim in strange places; Don't swim out after anything drifting; Don't stay in the water too long; Don't swim out to sea; Swim parallel and close to the shore; Do what the lifeguard tells you; Never use inflatable toys; Pay attention to signs on the beach; Don't be a bully; Learn to use equipment before trying it out, and; Learn resuscitation.
