The two Galway sailors from GBSC that travelled to Fenit at the weekend for the Tralee Bay Sailing Club Cruiser regatta came home winners. AWOL(Liam Burke) and Thats Life (Martin Breen) came 1st and 2nd respectively in Class 1. AWOL narrowly beat Disarray by half a point on the handicapping system to win the overall Regatta. The races were sailed over two days in light airs. AWOL had the best up wind speed all weekend. They called the best tactics and, with the exception of the last mark rounding had the best boat handling skills over any other boat all weekend. Many of the crew are regular dinghy sailors, they sail two to three times a week in dinghies and cruisers. The courses laid in Fenit by the OOD, Alan Crosby, allowed for tactics, boat speed, safety and crew drills with full vhf dialogue and typically two sausages in 5-7 kts of breeze over 90 minutes for the slowest boat with a 1 nautical mile beat. ( 0.7 ml to windward mark and o.3 ml to leeward mark, going to 1.5 ml from Mark 1 to Mark 2 in 12 kts +. Fenit Regatta was the first event of the second West Coast Superleague for cruisers, which was last won by Kilrush X332 'Chaos'. |
