Each year as part of the King of the Bay series, GBSC holds an overnight Race around the Aran Islands. It is a great sight to see the many boats heading out from Nimmo's Pier at 10pm as they take on the challenge of a long and sometimes difficult race. Depending on the wind strength and direction the race can take anything from seven to 12 hours to complete.

Languishing in the Bay without any wind, on a dark night, at best guessing which other boats are nearby can be an unusual experience as can flying spinnakers in stronger winds! Sailing around the back of the Aran Islands is a great treat only beaten by the joy of seeing Kilronan and perhaps bagging a win! Race fees go to Galway Hospice Foundation. Coincidentally the race this year is being held on Sunflower Day-their annual fundraising day.
