The 5th and penultimate race of the O'Tuairisg Spring Series was held last Wednesday in sunshine and a light 10 knot westerly breeze. In Class 1 as the boats came up to the line in the last seconds before the start, both Quelle Surprise and Joie De Vie attempted starts at the committee boat end but had badly positioned themselves, so they both had to turn away and come around again after being pushed up by other right of way boats. In another start line incident Iberaki, failed to keep clear of Catalpa the right of way boat and had to take her penalty before continuing her race. Catalpa was the early leader being closely followed by That's Life and AWOL. The light winds meant that the 1720 AfterMidnight and Optique, normally in contention had to race each other for the lower places. After rounding the windward mark Catalpa had trouble getting her spinnaker to fly and lost time to That's Life and AWOL and Joie de Vie back in the race after her bad start. After some tight duals between That's Life, Catalpa and Joie de Vie, Catalpa crossed the line first, but on corrected handicap time That's Life won the race by 13 seconds with Catalpa in 2nd and Joie de Vie in 3rd. The Class 2 had a less dramatic start with Rho Co Dar leading off the line the normally highly competitive Siamsa the last boat to start. However it didn't take long for Siamsa to get back in contention and vying with Rho Co Dor for the lead. After swapping places a couple of times it was Rho Co Dar that finally had the advantage over Siamsa at the finish to take 1st place. |
