The first race of the Alfa Romeo Late Summer Series took place on Wednesday, 23 July. On a perfect evening for sailing in flat water, in a light-to-moderate southerly breeze, the boats started on a reach from the club line with That's Life (Martin Breen) getting the best start, followed by After Midnight (flying a spinnaker), at the pin end of the line. All boats rounded Leverets and hoisted spinnakers on the downwind leg to Cockle Rock. The wind dropped during the race, and the Race Officer made the right decision to shorten the course. On the final rounding of the Mutton mark, That's Life, followed closely by Optique, sailed west to get a lift with the flowing tide. That's Life took first, which had led from the start, followed by Optique, and AWOL. In Class Two, Laught (Fiona O'Driscoll) had the best start at the pin end of the line, followed by RhoCoDar (Tomas Furey) at the committee end of the line. The other boats all started within seconds of each other, which made for close racing to the first mark. Siamsa (Mark Bruzzi) took the lead at the first mark, and led all the way to the finish, followed closely by RhoCoDar, and then Siamsa. All the boats made a spectacular sight on the Bay with spinnakers flying to the backdrop of a wonderful sunset. The race on Wednesday 30 will finish in the docks as the boats join the official welcome to the Green Dragon Racing Team. |
