Galway Lifeboat was called out to assist a windsurfer who had got into difficulties in the sea near Salthill Beach last Tuesday.

A lifeguard with the Irish Water Safety Council, who was on duty on Salthill beach, alerted the Irish Coastguard that a young male windsurfer appeared to be in difficulty on the bay.

The Coastguard alerted Galway RNLI Lifeboat who launched from Galway Docks at 3.50pm. The young windsurfer was assisted ashore by a second lifeguard, who went to his assistance. Both made it ashore safely and did not require medical assistance.

The Galway RNLI Lifeboat crew were: Helmsman Shane Folan, John Byrne and Martin Oliver. The RNLI Lifeboat service for Galway was launched in March 1996. All crewmembers are volunteers and are on call 24/7.
