In a bid to encourage safe and responsible boating for the summer months, a new initiative was launched on Thursday by IWS (Irish Water Safety) and Ireland's largest cruising company Emerald Star.

The 'Safe Motor Boating on Inland Waterways' Guide was launched by RTE's Café presenter Aidan Power - who himself has a nautical background with his father having served in the Irish Navy - Dustin's sidekick on the Once A Week Show, Sinead Ni Churnain, and keen young cruiser Blaithin O'Hea.

The easy-to-read guide contains a wealth of safety facts and important information on best boating practices. With a growing interest in what the Shannon has to offer, the number of people hopping on board to cruise the waterways year on year is on the increase with many cruising to enhance their own hobbies. Golfers, ramblers, cyclists, bird watchers, water sports and fishing enthusiasts are now fully embracing cruising as the best way to see and experience the Shannon. This guide is designed to make their experiences on the water all the more enjoyable and safe.

Irish Water Safety and Emerald Star encourage all members of the public to undergo water safety training this year so that they have the necessary lifesaving skills if required. They also urge all water enthusiasts to wear a Lifejacket, carry out regular checks on their lifejackets and have them serviced by an authorised agent every year.
