A freshening West/North-West wind gave rise to near perfect conditions for the first race in the Falcon Fires Cruiser Race series. It was obvious to spectators from the beginning of the race, as the boats made their way to the start line, that the race would be between the leading pair - both 1720s. Having made the better start, 'After Midnight' had the upper hand for the majority of the race leading the way at the windward mark where a colourful display of spinnaker sails helped them maintain their tight lead over arch competitor 'Optique', flying the distinctive bright orange logo of their sponsor, Optique Opticains. Placings at the gybe mark were closely contested, with 'Optique' making steady headway and hoping to overtake for a race win. But it was not to be. 'After Midnight' maintained their lead at the leeward mark and took line honours. Dave Vinnell, Rear Commodore Cruisers, thanked the many competitors, the Race Officer and the sponsors FalconFires. He looks forward to a busy season with many races and events planned for the Cruiser fleet. |
