The long-awaited improvement of Kilronan Harbour has been kicked off, with the signing of the contract between Galway County Council and Ascon Ltd for the harbour redevelopment.

When completed, the harbour will provide year-round shelter and much improved safe berthing facilities for all those using the harbour, including the residents of Inis M?r, fishermen, tourists, ferry operators, and the RNLI.

The works to be undertaken as part of this contract will include construction of a rock armoured breakwater with sea wall, construction of a new ten metre wide quay, new slipway and new cargo quay, dredging of harbour and provision of deepwater berth, provision of a safe parking and hard stand area, provision of a separate RNLI lifeboat pontoon, provision foul treatment plant, fire fighting equipment, stability works to protect warehouse on quay, rehabilitation works to the existing quay, installation of live stock holding pins, public lighting, navigational aids and miscellaneous/ancillary works.

It is expected that the project will be completed in 2010.
