An intensive training course with a difference opens up doors to a whole new world and new career opportunities. Out in the wilds of West Cork, the West Cork Sailing and Powerboating Centre is running a 22 week intensive training course to bring a complete beginner, or experienced sailor, up to Commercial Yachtmaster level – giving them the qualifications to skipper luxury yachts anywhere in the world.

Numerous Irish people leave Ireland every year to go to the UK or further, to join similar intensive training courses, so WCSPC decided it was about time Ireland had its own course. This course is a mass of ISA, RYA and Department of Marine recognised qualifications as well as some brilliant mile building adventurous sailing trips.

The programme is carefully created to build the students skills from nothing or little experience up to Yachtmaster. Dinghies, keelboats, yachts and powerboats are all important parts of the training programme, as well as the 2500 nautical miles of cruising training.

A Challenger 72 steel racing yacht is chartered to give the trainees an opportunity of a lifetime to crew on a journey to the Canary Islands and back, stopping in France, Spain and Portugal along the way.

This years 22 week course is €16,095, which includes bed, board and all training courses. Commencing September 2008 and finishing end of March 2009, with a break over the Christmas period to take a rest or build up some more nautical miles.

The course has run for two years now and all trainees have passed with flying colours. It is suitable for all adults over 18, with or without sailing experience.
