Galway Atlantaquaria is to hold science workshops during the summer months for children of all ages.

Under the aquarium's new Education Officer, Noirin Burke, the courses will carry on the science experiences of Science 4 Summer 2006 and 2007, which were previously run at GMIT by Ms Burke.

According to Ms Burke, "this is a fantastic opportunity to carry on the science experiences of Science 4 Summer 2006 and 2007 as the aquarium provides both classroom and laboratory facilities while also having the seashore and aquarium for our science investigations."

The workshops have been developed over a three-day period but aim to provide the same level of classes/experiments and fieldwork as was covered in Science 4 Summer 2006/2007 by running the school from 10am to 4pm each day. Class sizes will remain small (max. 16) to ensure each student has the best possible experience.

For the first time students will have the option of attending one, two or three days of the course with a discount if a student attends all three.

Day one will cover animal anatomy/dissections and animal behaviour - activities will be carried out in the classroom, laboratory, and the aquarium.

Day two will be dedicated to seashore activities. Students will make equipment for sampling marine life and will go on a beach survey. Students will also look at the physical environment at the seashore and carry sand investigations. Activities will be carried out in the classroom, laboratory and at the seashore. Day three will focus on water dynamics: This day will focus on water; its properties, the animals that live in it, the threats that face it from pollution and how many of the animals that live in it are endangered. Students will see how the water quality in the aquarium is maintained with a behind the scenes tour. Activities will be carried out in the classroom, laboratory and aquarium.

Each day is planned with double the number of laboratory/fieldwork activities to classroom sessions to ensure that students carry out as much hands-on science as possible. The cost is €40 per day or €100.00 for all three days.
