Dinghy sailing at Galway Bay Sailing Club continued last week with the racing held in very blustery conditions. A top wind speed of 34 knots was recorded at the club’s weather station.
In the multihulls, Tony Murphy was in his usual form and had the best start of the fleet. He was closely followed by Gerry Murray on his FX1 with Marie Salmon as crew, which was testament to the conditions as Gerry generally sails single-handed.
However in the very gusty conditions, he was immediately overpowered and lost control of his boat, letting Tom Murphy in to sneak line honours. Tony Murphy meanwhile sailed a very conservative race behind the two faster boats but his skill and patience won out in the end once the times were corrected to allow for handicap ratings and he won the day with a comfortable margin. First on the night was Tony Murphy, in second place was Tom Murphy and in third was Gerry Murray. The Monohull Fleet had only one finisher, Cathal Clarke, with Marguerite Leech as crew. The conditions proved too difficult for the other competitors.
