Éamon Ó Cuív TD, the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, has sanctioned a grant of €1.88 million to carry out works on the main pier on Inishbofin, Co. Galway.

According to Simon Murray, Island Manager of Inishbofin Development Company, "The funding for the pier is to sheet pile the existing pier and make it solid. The previous structure was open plan underneath, this basically means that the sea went under the deck and made it very hard for boats to tie alongside in any hint of a wave or worse. This sheet piling and closing in of the original structure will mean there will be no under wash and it will offer the ferry and boats protection when berthing at the pier."

It is hoped that the project will be finished by March 2008.

Minister Ó Cuív said, "These improvements will increase the sustainability of the island in general. The provision of safer facilities for ferries, cargo and fishing boats and leisure craft of all types will greatly improve access to the island."
