West residents have mobilised their campaign against the proposed development in the area, with the issue due to go before Galway City Council for consideration in April.

A total of 104 households and businesses in the immediate area have signed the neighbourhood letter in which they stated their feelings and objections in relation to the rejuvenation scheme planned for the area by the council.

The issue will probably be voted on by GCC in mid-April.

“Our message to Council is, in a nutshell:  The West is a marvellous community. It already fulfils the aims of the scheme. Bringing in the scheme may endanger what we have. If it ain't broke, don't fix it,” said one member of the West residents’ association.

“I will be taking the residents’ concerns very seriously indeed. The residents have put in place their submissions and we have to respect this if consultation is going to mean anything. These are the people that love, know and live in the area so I will be talking these submissions very seriously,” said Councillor Catherine Connolly.
