A Galway light rail system (GLUAS) has been proposed as the way forward for public transport in the city.

A workshop on sustainable transport for Galway held at NUIG recently has found the outer bypass and the redevelopment of Ceannt Station are only part of a bigger solution for the city.

Professor Lewis Lesley, a noted light rail expert from the UK, urged civic and business leaders to embrace a project such as GLUAS and give it the strong backing that it needed to succeed. He felt that it can be shown to be viable from a financial perspective and that it would deliver to Galway the modern public transport system that the city and its people deserved.

The workshop heard renewed calls for a light rail system, which was proposed as a highly attractive option that would provide the city with a clean, modern and reliable public transport service.
