Details on the proposed incinerator for the Tynagh Mines site in East Galway will be revealed in two weeks time, according to Galway East Deputy Ulick Burke.
Deputy Burke said the people in East Galway are “waiting anxiously” for the proposals to come to light and are “in a vacuum” until they know who’s behind the incinerator plans. The developers have applied for the application to be considered under the Strategic Infrastructure Development Act, which bypasses the normal county planning section, and goes straight to An Bord Pleanala. This has caused concern among the local community and representatives from the East Galway Against Incineration Committee (EGAI) hope to meet with Environment Minister John Gormley over the waste to energy plant proposals. Deputy Burke has spoken to and written to the minister requesting the meeting as the campaign to block the plant gathers pace. A spokesperson for Minister Gormley said a request has been lodged to discuss “waste management issues” and the request is “under consideration”. A public meeting will be held tomorrow, Thursday 26 July, at 8.30pm in the Temperance Hall, Loughrea to discuss the proposals. Leading recycling expert, Dr Niamh Clune will address the meeting. Noreen Robinson of the EGAI said it’s vital that people are aware of the health risks associated with incineration. The community has the backing of Galway County Council who passed a motion this week by Independent Councillor Willie Burke to block the incinerator plans. |
