The Galway branch of the Progressive Democrats will hold a convention next month to choose a successor to fill Senator Ciar?n Cannon's county council seat.

There are two candidates in the running for the seat, representing the Loughrea Electoral Area. Loughrea Town Councillor Michael 'Mogie' Maher, and Chairperson of the Loughrea Playground Committee, Sylvia Burke, are to fight it out at the convention, which is expected to be chaired by party leader and Health Minister Mary Harney.
