The NUI, Galway student who was tragically killed when he jumped over a wall last week has been buried in Clare.

Ciaran Toomey, a first year medical student at NUIG, was on a night out in the city last Monday night when he went strayed from his friends. On Tuesday morning, the group retraced their footsteps looking for the 18 year old and discovered his body at a site near Loughgeorge. It is thought that Ciaran jumped over the wall, not realising that there was an 18ft drop on the other side. A post mortem confirmed that he died of head injuries consistent with a fall.

Thousands of mourners from Limerick, Clare and Galway attended the memorial service at Parteen Parish Church on Friday afternoon, after which the student was laid to rest at Ballycannon cemetery.

Parteen priest Fr Tom Carroll said that the local community were in shock following the news, while Ciaran's parents Ger and Anna are devastated with the loss of their only son.

"It's something no family should have to go through; to lose their son just as he was starting out his career is heartbreaking, but they are surrounded by friends and family who will help them get through these next few days and months," he said.
