Traffic calming measures are to be introduced at the junction of the N63 and the N17 at Loughgeorge.

The junction at the Central Tavern has been the site of several road deaths in the past, claiming the lives of 20-year-old Liam Loughlin and 19-year-old Niall Greaney in June 2007, as well as 60-year-old Mary Dunleavy in 2002.

Local Councillor Jim Cuddy, who has been lobbying the county council for this improvement, wholeheartedly welcomed the development, saying construction would commence in the autumn.

A traffic calming roundabout will be introduced in order to improve access to the Corrandulla exit off the road.

Cllr Cuddy revealed that the council is also planning to deal with contracts for a Quality Bus Corridor from the Kiniska Road to Claregalway village in the near future. However, he added that residents' concerns about removal of the traffic island will be addressed when he speaks to the county council's senior engineer.
