Ronan Ó Conghaile from Connemara was selected from among film students all over Europe, including Iceland and Norway. ELIA is an independent network of over 300 Arts Education Institutes in 47 countries, covering all the disciplines of the arts. The aim of the E3 Film Project is to promote multilingualism and interculturalism in Europe. An international jury in London declared Ronan the winner of his category last week. The scripts were evaluated according to criteria such as artistic quality of the application, relevance to the theme, the contribution of multilingualism to intercultural dialogue and feasibility. The selected films from this competition will be first presented during the Prix Europa Festival in Berlin in October. The students from the GMIT Film and Television Department expect to start shooting Ronan's film in June with postproduction happening in July. Vivienne Dick, Film Lecturer at GMIT Cluain Mhuire, said the award was a fantastic achievement for Ronan and the Film & Television staff in the Institute. The GMIT BA in Film and Television at the Cluain Mhuire campus is delivered in association with the Galway Film Centre. The programme provides students with a specialised knowledge of the history, theory and practical working of documentary and filmmaking, including such specialist areas as production, editing, sound, production design and scriptwriting. It also provides a knowledge of the planning, budgeting and management requirements involved in shooting and delivering film and video projects. A work placement in year two provides valuable experience alongside professionals in the film and television industry. Meanwhile, the GMIT Film and Television Department will hold its annual end of year Graduation Screening in the Town Hall Theatre on Saturday 7 June. Twenty-eight students will present three dramas and three documentaries. |
