A new oriental experience has arrived in Galway, with the opening of The Asian Tea House on Mary Street.

The restaurant, which opened five weeks ago, is serving local and international produce in oriental style dishes from Asia, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and China.

Restaurant proprietor Terry Cummins said the restaurant is 100 per cent Asian, from the décor to the dishes.

"All dishes are MSG free and are completely authentic to their country of origin. Our meat is supplied by Heaney meats and all our vegetables and fish are also sourced locally. We often have to import our ingredients for some sauces," he said.

After travelling extensively around Asian and China, Terry realised that there was a gap in the Irish market for an actual tea house restaurant. "Tea houses have been around China for centuries, so I thought why couldn't I bring a tea house to Galway. We have over 35 different types of tea and it is even surprising me how popular they are with our customers," he said.

The restaurant space itself is small and intimate, seating 46 people. However it has a full licence and has already catered for a wedding party.
