An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has said that he plans to create a fairer,
stronger Galway, which will continue to grow and prosper and which will
remain a driving force not just in the West but in the country in
general. Speaking at a fundraising lunch to launch the FF Galway West General Election candidates, Mr Ahern said the Galway of 2007 is now a “social, cultural and economic powerhouse” in the West and the coming years will provide the opportunity “to cement Galway’s pivotal role as a centre of commerce and culture. Mr Ahern said the National Development Plan is the centrepiece for the Government’s future plans. “This unprecedented plan sets out in a structured and realistic manner how Galway and Ireland can continue to harness its huge potential. “The new NDP promises huge investment in every aspect of the lives of Galway people. It also emphasises the central role in the development of the West that the Galway Gateway will play in the whole regions development.”
An Taoiseach described the large investment to be made in infrastructure in Galway under the NDP and said the combination of vastly improved road and the new rail connection “will enable the Western economic corridor to grow and develop”. “Galway Airport continues to thrive with huge passenger numbers year on year. In the NDP, funding of €96.5 million is now being made available to regional airports, such as Galway to grow and develop. Here in Galway, you are blessed to have two of modern Ireland’s leading third level institutes. “NUIG, with its sister third-level institute GMIT, has built upon a strong reputation at home and abroad for top class education in Galway and the West. Building on our €110 million investment in NUIG and GMIT, the new NDP will significantly strengthen the R&D capacity in the city’s third level institutions. “As part of the NDP, the regeneration of Galway Docks has been prioritised. This ambitious plan will breathe a new life and energy into Galway’s streets and it will dramatically enhance its national and international reputation for business, culture and tourism,” he said. Referring to the budget, Mr Ahern said, “The changes which we have made to the Business Expansion Scheme will allow businesses in Galway and the West to develop their potential in the coming years. “Today in Galway, I want to renew my guarantee that if re-elected, Fianna Fáil in Government will continue to work with and for all sectors of business here in Ireland in the years ahead. We are committed to supporting business and to keeping taxes low.” The Minister of State for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, and Galway West General Election candidate Mr Frank Fahey celebrated his silver jubilee as a Dáil deputy on the same day that he, Minister Eamon O Cuiv and Galway City Councillor Michael Crowe were launched as Fianna Fáil election candidates, at the lunch in the Galway Bay Hotel on Saturday. Four hundred of the party faithful were in attendance to hear An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern. Mr Ahern also welcomed the city’s newest Fianna Fáil councillor Mary Leahy. |
