Galway Archaeological and Historical Society will host a talk on 'Galway Corporation in the 16th Century at Harbour Hotel, Dock Road, Galway at 8pm on Monday 14 January.

The paper, by Mr Kieran Hoare, will examine the role of Galway Corporation in the sixteenth century in representing the interests of the merchant oligarchy (the Tribes) of Galway. It will outline the legal framework within which it functioned, and how the corporation sought to regulate all aspects of city life at this time. It will then explore the relationship of the town with royal government, the hinterland of Galway and finally how it interacted with other townspeople.

Kieran Hoare works as an archivist in the James Hardiman Library, NUI, Galway and is currently researching the evolution of urban oligarchies in Irish towns in the later middle ages, and has published articles on medieval Irish guilds and municipal government.

The talk will be followed by the society's AGM. All are welcome to attend.
