A major clampdown on illegal taxis in the city took place last weekend when members of the Taxi Regulator, Gardaí, Customs and Welfare and Revenue were involved in joint operation. The Galway Independent understands that a number of prosecutions are pending, resulting from this sting operation. Chairman of the Galway Taxi Association, Enda O'Rourke welcomed the investigations, saying he hoped it was a sign of things to come. "This is the first time that a multi-task force has taken to the streets to undertake a series of tests. We welcome the move, but don't want it to be a political window dressing. This needs to happen regularly. "We represent the full-time taxi drivers of the city. The social welfare have only gotten involved because resources have become scarce for them. It is vital for the various government departments to share information, so we can provide properly regulated industry that customers can be confident in." A spokesperson for the Taxi Regulator confirmed they had been involved in an operation in Galway over the weekend. "We can confirm that the regulator was involved in a joint operation with a number of enforcement agencies in various locations across the city on Friday night." A spokesperson for the Galway Gardai also confirmed their involvement in the joint operation and confirmed that some prosecutions are expected. |
