Galway-based fast food chain Supermac’s has picked Trócaire as its charity of choice for 2008.

The campaign will be launched with a fundraising initiative throughout all of the 90 Supermac’s stores nationwide, starting with a counter top collection and followed up by a number of fundraising projects throughout the year.

Supermac’s Managing Director, Pat McDonagh, said the company is delighted “to be able to support the great work done by Trócaire in the developing world.”

Trócaire was established in 1973 and is the official overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland. Trócaire is committed to working with people who have had no opportunity to overcome poverty without some initial support – people living on as little as $1 per day. Right now 800 million people do not have enough food and 13 million children die needlessly each year from malnutrition or preventable diseases.

Each year Trócaire supports thousands of people in tackling poverty and overcoming injustice.

Claire Whelan, Trócaire’s Fundraising and Marketing Officer, said funds raised through initiatives like the Supermac’s coin collection boxes were invaluable and provide much-needed funding for development projects.
